No. 1 Women's Soccer suffers first loss of season to No. 4 Martin Methodist

COLUMBIA, Ky. – Less than 24 hours after its victory over No. 10 Lindsey Wilson College, the Spring Arbor University women's soccer team was back in action Saturday for day two of the 2017 Lindsey Wilson Classic against No. 4 Martin Methodist College.

The undefeated RedHawks used two second half goals to hand the top-ranked Cougars their first loss of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After a scoreless first 45 minutes, Martin Methodist found the back of the net twice early in the second half to take control of the match. The RedHawks got a goal from Katie Reid in the 49th minute to break the deadlock. Less than four minutes later, MMC's Millene Cabral Vieira scored to double the lead.
  • Martin Methodist posted 19 shots compared to Spring Arbor's 17. Bethany Balcer had eight of SAU's shots, including three on goal.
  • The Cougars held an 8-5 edge in corner kicks.
  • Goalkeeper Ashley Timmons finished the match with three saves.

 
 

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE

  • Spring Arbor and Martin Methodist have faced each other in each of the last three years with the RedHawks owning a 2-1-0 record over the Cougars.
  • The two goals are the most the Cougars have conceded in a single match since Oct. 17, 2015 when SAU defeated Taylor 6-4.
  • The setback was the first regular season loss for Spring Arbor since Sept. 12, 2015 when Martin Methodist defeated the Cougars by an identical 2-0 score.

  • The RedHawks picked up their second win over a Top 5 ranked opponent this year.
  • Martin Methodist goalkeeper Caitlin Dumond made six saves for the shutout. The RedHawks have posted four straight clean sheets.
