No. 16 Men's Basketball earns hard-fought road win at Goshen

GOSHEN, Ind. – Behind career-high performances from sophomore Paul Marandet and junior Tommy Hamilton, No. 16 Spring Arbor University earned a hard-fought 95-89 victory over Crossroads League foe Goshen College at Gunden Gymnasium on Tuesday night.

Marandet, the reigning Crossroads League Player of the Week, and Hamilton combined to score the final 27 points for the Cougars over the last 8:33 of the game. Marandet finished with 34 points while Hamilton dropped 22.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Goshen connected on 53 percent of its shots against one of the toughest defenses in the Crossroads League, but it was not enough as Spring Arbor shot a blistering 59 percent from the field.
  • After trailing most of the game, the Maple Leafs used a 9-0 run midway through the second half to grab their first lead since the opening moments, 66-64. The Cougars responded immediately, however, with a 9-0 run of their own to retake the lead.
  • Goshen clawed back to within one at the 6:11 mark, but another 9-0 SAU run, capped by five points from Hamilton, helped put the Cougars ahead for good.
  • Marandet and Hamilton sealed the win down the stretch, combining to go 9-for-10 at the free throw line.

 
 

FOR THE COUGARS

  • Marandet finished with 34 points on 10-of-16 shooting and a perfect 13-for-13 mark from the free throw line. He also added six assists and four rebounds. Hamilton scored 22 points, going 7-for-12 from the field, including hitting 3-of-6 from three-point range.
  • Zach Medendorp and Jeff Beckman also scored in double figures. Medendorp had 11 points with three blocks and Beckman registered 10 points and seven rebounds.
  • Spring Arbor finished the evening shooting 59 percent (32-for-54) from the floor and 92 percent (24-for-26) from the free throw line.

 
 

FOR THE MAPLE LEAFS

  • Billy Geschke paced Goshen with 28 points while three other Leafs scored in double figures.
  • Goshen shot 53 percent (33-for-62), including 40 percent (6-for-15) from behind the arc.
  • The Maple Leafs forced SAU into 16 turnovers and converted those giveaways into 19 points.
