SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University women's basketball team gave nationally ranked Indiana Wesleyan University a scare on Saturday afternoon, giving IWU all it could handle for nearly 40 minutes.

The Cougars trailed the No. 13 ranked Wildcats by four, 61-57, with seven minutes to play, but were unable to get any closer as IWU held on for a 77-65 victory.

THE BASICS

FINAL SCORE: Spring Arbor 65, #13 Indiana Wesleyan 77

LOCATION: SAU Fieldhouse | Spring Arbor, Mich.

RECORDS: Spring Arbor 8-13 (2-8 CL), Indiana Wesleyan 16-6 (8-2 CL)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Spring Arbor came out strong against the nationally ranked Wildcats. The Cougars forced IWU into eight turnovers in the first quarter and held an 11-9 lead with three minutes to play in the opening period.
  • Indiana Wesleyan settled in and used a 12-0 run in the second quarter to build a double-digit lead. The Cougars trailed by 11, 34-23, with under a minute to go in the stanza, but a three-pointer from Autumn Goggin just before halftime closed the gap to eight at the break.
  • Spring Arbor carried that momentum over into the start of the second half as Faith Johnson opened the third quarter by burying another triple before a Goggin lay-up made it a three point game, 34-31.
  • The visitors would slowly increase the advantage to double figures to begin the fourth quarter, but another SAU run led by Goggin and Ryann Laier trimmed the deficit to three, 60-57, at the 6:56 mark.
  • The Wildcat defense held Spring Arbor scoreless, however, over the next four minutes while the offense gradually pulled away going a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line.

FOR THE COUGARS

  • Goggin and Wright paced Spring Arbor with 19 and 16 points, respectively.
  • Johnson registered her first career double-double with 11 points and a career-high 12 assists.
  • Spring Arbor outshot IWU, hitting 51 percent (24-for-47) of its field goal attempts.

FOR THE WILDCATS

  • Anna Imhoff posted 22 points to lead Indiana Wesleyan.
  • The Wildcats shot 43 percent (23-for-54) and were 25-for-33 from the free throw line.
  • IWU held the edge on the glass, out-rebounding Spring Arbor 35-25. The Wildcats had 17 offensive boards and converted those into 21 second-chance points.

UP NEXT

It is Destiny Rescue Night on Wednesday, Jan. 24 when Spring Arbor hosts No. 22 Taylor University (15-7, 8-2 CL). The game tips off at 7 p.m.

The Crossroads League and Destiny Rescue will partner to host a Blackout Night event at all five women's basketball games around the league on the night of Wednesday, January 24.

Destiny Rescue is an internationally recognized Christian non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing and restoring children trapped in the sex trade. Since 2011, Destiny Rescue has saved over 2,000 children enslaved around the world, while preventing hundreds more from entering the sex trade through various prevention and awareness programs.

The cost to save one child is approximately $1,500 and the goal for the 2018 event is to raise enough funds from the five games to save at least 25 children. Funds will be collected at each game through donations, t-shirt sales and the selling of jewelry products made by girls who have been rescued by Destiny Rescue. Fans can also donate online any time at the links provided above.

Representatives from Destiny Rescue will also attend each game and speak to the crowd at halftime.
