Third quarter slump hurts Cougars

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – A cold offensive third quarter by Spring Arbor University was the turning point in its 57-41 loss to Huntington University on Saturday at the SAU Fieldhouse.

Trailing by just five at halftime, Spring Arbor was held to 3-of-12 shooting and outscored 15-6 in the third quarter as Huntington pulled away.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Spring Arbor and Huntington were tied 8-8 at the end of the first period before the Foresters opened the second period on a 6-0 run. Rachel Nelson and Anne Marie Wright guided the Cougars back though with back-to-back three-pointers.
  • Nelson and Wright combined for 14 of SAU's 16 points in the quarter, but the Cougars still trailed 29-24 at halftime.
  • Nelson opened the third quarter with another bucket to close the gap to three, but a 9-2 Forester run would break the game open. The Cougars would shoot just 3-for-12 from the field in the period as HU built its lead to 14, 44-30, heading into the fourth quarter.
  • Huntington stretched its advantage to 20 midway through the fourth and hang on for the win.

 
 

FOR THE COUGARS

  • Nelson finished with a team-high 12 points with six rebounds and two steals while Wright added 10 points.
  • Gracie Cabana had five points and three assists, and Gabby Barnett and Faith Johnson chipped in four points apiece.
  • Spring Arbor ended the afternoon shooting 34 percent (15-for-44) from the field.

 
 

FOR THE FORESTERS

  • Three Foresters scored in double figures, including Casey Morton, who had a team-high 13 points off the bench.
  • Brooke Saylor registered a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds.
  • Huntington was 38 percent (21-for-55) from the floor and just 2-for-14 from behind the arc.
  • HU did most of its damage down low, scoring 34 points in the paint.

 
 

UP NEXT

Spring Arbor will welcome Bethel College (6-12, 1-5 CL) to town on Wednesday, Jan. 10. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
