Goggin's double-double leads Spring Arbor past MVNU

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio – An explosive fourth quarter, coupled with a double-double from Autumn Goggin powered the Spring Arbor University women's basketball team past Mount Vernon Nazarene University 74-62 Wednesday night at Ariel Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first two quarters was a back and forth affair that saw 13 lead changes and neither team leading by more than four points.
  • Spring Arbor trailed by three with less than two minutes remaining in the second quarter, but the Cougars got three straight stops on defense and baskets from Faith Johnson, Anne Marie Wright and Goggin before the buzzer to take a 32-29 lead into halftime.
  • The seesaw battle continued into the third quarter before SAU began to open things up. With the score tied late in the stanza, the Cougars scored five unanswered points to claim a 50-45 advantage heading to the fourth quarter.
  • In the fourth quarter, Spring Arbor hit 9-of-11 shots from the floor to help stave off a comeback attempt from the home team. Goggin powered the SAU offense going 4-for-4 with eight points in the period.

 
 

FOR SPRING ARBOR

  • Goggin finished with a game-high 25 points and 10 rebounds to record her first double-double of the season.
  • Rachel Nelson and Wright followed with 12 points apiece while Ryann Laier added eight points and seven boards. Gabby Barnett ripped down nine rebounds to go along with five points.
  • Spring Arbor shot 46 percent (29-for-63) from the floor.
  • The Cougars out-rebounded MVNU 40-30.

 
 

FOR MOUNT VERNON NAZARENE

  • Mount Vernon Nazarene was led by Natalie Carpenter, who registered 23 points. Sierra Basista ended the night with 16.
  • MVNU was held to 38 percent (26-for-68) shooting and 5-for-19 from three-point range.
