SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Spring Arbor University women's basketball team opened the 2018-19 campaign with a 66-58 road win over Indiana University-South Bend on Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars overcame a sluggish first quarter and outscored the Titans 56-41 over the final 30 minutes of action to earn their first victory of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Spring Arbor trailed 17-10 after the first quarter, but bounced back with a big second to tie the score heading into halftime.
- The Cougars held a slim 39-38 lead at the 3:46 mark of the third period until senior Rachel Nelson and sophomore Gracie Cabana led SAU on a 9-2 run to close out the quarter.
- The Titans scored eight straight points to open the fourth quarter and tie the score again. No team would lead by more than three points until the final minute of the game. With the score knotted at 56-56 and 1:47 remaining, sophomore Anne Marie Wright buried a clutch three-pointer to put SAU in front for good. The Cougars would put the game away going 7-for-8 from the free throw line down the stretch.
FOR THE COUGARS
- Wright and Cabana scored 15 points apiece while Nelson finished with 14. Cabana also added six rebounds and three assists. Ryann Laier had nine points and three boards while Gabby Barnett posted six points and a team-best nine rebounds.
- Spring Arbor shot 50 percent (21-for-42) from the field and was 17-for-18 from the free throw line.
FOR THE TITANS
- Kylie Fehrman had a game-high 19 points to lead Indiana-South Bend. Taitlyn Trenshaw chipped in 10 points.
- The Titans were limited to 32 percent (19-for-59) shooting.

Spring Arbor will host Rochester College (4-0) in its home opener on Tuesday, Oct. 30 at 5:30 p.m.
