THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Spring Arbor 85, Rochester 72
LOCATION: McDonald Athletic Center | Spring Arbor, Mich.
RECORDS: Spring Arbor 4-1, Rochester 2-1
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Spring Arbor started fast opening up a 9-0 lead less than five minutes into the game. Jeff Beckman got the Cougars going with an old-fashioned three-point play just 18 seconds in to ignite the scoring spurt.
- Rochester fought its way back, and would eventually grab a 17-15 lead at the 11:35 mark of the first half. That would prove to be the only time the Warriors led the entire night.
- SAU immediately responded with a 14-2 run to push the lead to double digits. Brandon Durnell fueled the run with seven of his 12 first half points.
- The visitors would refuse to go down easily. After trailing by as many as 10 during the first half, Rochester narrowed the deficit to one, 50-49, midway through the second half. However, Marandet would take over down the stretch. The veteran floor general was unstoppable as he led SAU on a 13-1 run, scoring eight points and handing out two assists, over a four-minute span to push the margin back to double digits.
- Rochester continued to fight, closing the gap to six, 73-67, with 1:29 remaining, but the Cougars put the game away at the free throw line.
FOR THE COUGARS
- Marandet's double-double was his first of the season and fourth of his career. The junior guard also continues to climb closer to the 1,000 point plateau with 989 career points.
- Durnell recorded a career-high 18 points going 8-for-13 from the field with five rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Payton DeWildt followed with 16 points and Beckman added 14 points and eight boards. Tom Hamilton finished with 10 points, seven assists and five rebounds.
- Spring Arbor shot 48 percent (29-for-60) from the field on the night and went 20-for-30 from the free throw line. The Cougars held a slight edge on the glass, out-rebounding the Warriors 39-37.
- SAU forced Rochester into 15 turnovers while committing just seven.
FOR THE WARRIORS
- Armand Cartwright and Justin Nafso paced Rochester with 20 and 19 points, respectively.
- The Warriors made 46 percent (29-for-63) of their field goal attempts, but were limited to 11 trips to the free throw line all night and converted just six.
