SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Paul Marandet became the 45th player in Spring Arbor University history to reach 1,000 career points in a 78-67 win over Ohio Christian University to close out the Trent Allen Memorial Classic on Saturday.
The win was the fourth straight for the Cougars, who improved to 5-1 overall.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Marandet entered the contest needing just 11 points to reach the milestone, and would score 16 in the first half alone to help give Spring Arbor a 41-39 advantage at halftime.
- Coming out of the locker room, a Luke Barber three-pointer and a Brandon Durnell jumper would boost the Cougar lead to seven.
- Ohio Christian kept the score close for much of the game, trailing 53-52 with 13:51 to play. However, SAU would go on a 13-3 run, powered by three's from Marandet, Tom Hamilton and Nick Welch, over the next five minutes to build a comfortable 66-55 lead.
- The Trailblazers made one last push, closing the gap to seven with 7:45 remaining, but another scoring spurt pushed the margin back to double digits.
FOR THE COUGARS
- Marandet went 6-for-11 from the field and 8-for-9 from the free throw line on his way to a season-high 21 points. He also dished out four assists.
- Jeff Beckman scored 13 points and hauled in 14 rebounds off the bench for his second double-double of the season. Welch finished with 11 points while Barber and Durnell added 10 apiece.
- Spring Arbor shot 53 percent (26-for-49) and dominated the glass, out-rebounding the Trailblazers 43-19.
- The Cougars outscored OCU 38-20 in the paint and had a 19-0 advantage in second-chance points.
FOR THE TRAILBLAZERS
- Three Ohio Christian players finished in double figures with Corey Wyman leading the way with 17 points. Thomas Woods finished with 15 and Troy Mundy chipped in 10.
- The Trailblazers shot a sizzling 50 percent (13-for-26), including six three-pointers in the first half, but were limited to just 34 percent (11-for-32) over the final 20 minutes.
