Cougars' upset bid comes up just short against No. 10 Taylor

UPLAND, Ind. – Spring Arbor University came up just short of knocking off a Top 25 ranked team for the second time in 11 days on Saturday before ultimately falling to No. 10 Taylor University 57-55.

The Cougars led for 34 minutes before surrendering the lead, and tied the score at 55-55 in the final minute before the Trojans sank two key free throws to escape with the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Rachel Nelson opened the game with a three-pointer to kick start a 12-2 Spring Arbor run, and the Cougars would stay in front until the closing minutes of the game.
  • Taylor closed the gap to one multiple times, but Spring Arbor answered each Trojan charge and took a 45-39 lead into the fourth quarter.
  • The home team opened the final period on a 12-3 run, capped by a three-pointer from Becca Buchs, to take their first lead of the afternoon, 51-48. Taylor led by three in the last two minutes, but a clutch triple from Anne Marie Wright tied the score, 55-55, with 1:44 remaining. However, Buchs would sink a pair of free throws in the closing seconds to put TU in front and the Trojans would make a defensive stand on SAU's final possession.

 
 

FOR THE COUGARS

  • Three Cougars scored in double figures, led by Wright's 17 points. Gracie Cabana finished with 13 points and three assists while Nelson recorded her first double-double of the season with 11 points and a career-high 12 rebounds.
  • Spring Arbor shot 44 percent (19-for-43) on the afternoon.
  • The Cougars out-rebounded Taylor 33-29.

 
 

FOR THE TROJANS

  • Buchs scored a team-high 16 points to lead Taylor. Kendall Bradbury and Aubrey Wright followed with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
  • The Trojans were held to 34 percent (19-for-55) from the field.
