First half surge propels Men's Basketball past Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University men's basketball team rolled past Kalamazoo College 89-58 in non-league action on Saturday.

The Cougars and Hornets were separated by just one point midway through the first half, but SAU would outscore the home team 25-5 over the final nine minutes of the period to put the game out of reach.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Back-to-back three-pointers from Denver Cade and Brandon Durnell gave Spring Arbor a 13-8 lead at the 10:44 mark of the first half. Kalamazoo answered with four quick points, however, to get within one.
  • That was as close as the Hornets would get the rest of the way. A Luke Barber triple was the beginning of an 11-0 run.
  • Spring Arbor limited the Hornets to just one field goal over the final nine minutes of the first half, and the Cougars outscored the home team 25-5 on their way to taking a 38-17 lead into halftime.
  •  SAU would lead by as many as 34 in the second half, cruising to its third straight win.

 
 

FOR THE COUGARS

  • Durnell finished with a game-high 25 points – one point off his career-high. He went 9-for-13 from the field and grabbed a team-best eight rebounds.
  • Paul Marandet posted 11 points, five rebounds and four assists while Tom Hamilton chipped in 10 points.
  • All 12 Cougars reached the scoring column. Cade finished seven points and seven rebounds and Daniel Cluster added five points and six boards.
  • Spring Arbor shot 50 percent (30-for-60) on the day, and went 24-for-33 from the free throw line.
  • The Cougars dominated the glass, out-rebounding Kalamazoo 46-26.

 
 

FOR THE HORNETS

  • Bass Ollie and Jeremiah Vincent led Kalamazoo with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
  • The Hornets were 40 percent (23-for-58) from the field, but made just seven trips to the charity stripe (4-for-7).
