SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The No. 22 ranked Spring Arbor University men's basketball team suffered a close 84-78 loss against Grace College Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars trailed by nine with three minutes to play, but closed the gap to two with a 7-0 run over a minute span. The Lancers, however, managed to hold off the late charge to deal SAU its fourth straight setback.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Tommy Hamilton started the game off with a mid-range jumper, and the Cougars and Lancers traded buckets back and forth.
- With the score tied 11-11, Grace would heat up making seven of its next nine field goal attempts on the way to grabbing a double-digit lead, 27-17, at the 8:22 mark.
- Spring Arbor clawed its way back and, by halftime, the Cougars closed the deficit to three, 34-31, following a bucket from Paul Marandet just before the buzzer.
- The Cougars led by seven, 46-39, at the 15:05 mark, but the Lancers came back with makes from Haden Deaton, Erik Bowen and Jaret Sons.
- The score was tied 64-64 with 6:27 left, but the Lancers would grab the lead for good with an 8-0 run.
- Trailing 74-65 with less than three minutes to go, Marandet scored five straight points as part of a 7-0 SAU run to get back into the game, but Grace put a halt to the run with a three-pointer from Deaton.
FOR THE COUGARS
- Marandet recorded 26 points on 9-of-12 shooting with three assists and two steals. Senior Zach Medendorp had 22 points and five rebounds while Hamilton added 14 points and six assists.
- The Cougars shot 44 percent (29-for-66) from the field and were 73 percent (16-for-22) from the from the free throw line.
- Defensively, SAU forced Grace into 15 turnovers while committing just six of their own.
FOR THE LANCERS
- Four Grace players scored double digit points. Sons had 10 points and Matt Jennings added 13 points, five assists and two steals. Logan Godfrey recorded 14 points and five rebounds while Haden Deaton had a team-high of 19 points.
- The Lancers shot 53 percent (29-for-55) on the afternoon, including hitting 9-of-17 from behind the arc. The visitors also shot 85 percent from the free throw line going 17-for-20.
