Softball sweeps Grace in home-opening doubleheader

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University softball team picked up a 5-4 victory and a 10-4 win against Grace College in its home opener on Monday afternoon.

Senior Kelsey Brown picked up a win in the circle and went a perfect 7-for-7 at the plate over the two games, including a grand slam to help power the Cougars past the Lancers in game two of the doubleheader.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Spring Arbor pulled ahead early in game one. The Cougars scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and added another run on an RBI double by Jordan Burman in the third to grab a 3-0 lead.
  • After being shutout through the first five innings, Grace exploded for four runs in the sixth to jump in front. Kyleigh Garner powered the Lancers with a three-run homer.
  • SAU responded immediately, however, with two runs in the home half of the sixth – both with two outs – to regain the lead. Hope Longenbarger started the rally with a two-out single. After a wild pitch, she would come around to score on a base hit by Maddison Brock. Brock would score one batter later following a Lancer error.
  • The Lancers threatened in the seventh, putting the go-ahead run on base, but Brown wiggled her way out of the jam to earn her fourth win of the season.
  • In addition to her win in the circle, Brown was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with a triple and two runs scored.

 
 

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Brown's big day continued in game two as she opened the bottom of the first inning with a solo homer to right-center field. Spring Arbor would tack on another run after an RBI double by Sydney Taylor.
  • With the score tied 4-4, the Cougars plated two runs in the fourth to regain the lead for good. Aubrey Herrema scored on a GC error, and Taylor followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home Hannah VanManen.
  • Spring Arbor broke the game open an inning later with a grand slam by Brown.
  • Brown was 3-for-3 with two home runs and a career-high six RBI's. Between both games, she was 7-for-7 at the dish.
  • Herrema went 2-for-2 with two runs scored while Taylor had two RBI's.
  • Lauren Heath went the distance pitching all seven innings to earn her sixth victory of the season. She allowed just one earned run on five hits.
