Softball completes season sweep of Bethel with two wins Wednesday

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Strong pitching by senior Kelsey Brown and sophomore Lauren Heath wrapped up another sweep of Bethel College in 7-2 and 6-2 decisions on Wednesday afternoon at the Cougar Softball Field.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Bethel led 2-1 after three innings of play in game one, but, after being silenced early on, the Spring Arbor offense erupted over the final three frames.
  • Hannah VanManen delivered a two out, two-RBI single in the bottom of the fourth to put SAU on top 3-2. Then, a two-RBI double by Sydney Taylor highlighted a three-run fifth for the Cougars.
  • Kyla Semones was 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and run scored. Jessica Marwede and VanManen collected two hits apiece while VanManen matched her season-high with three RBI's.
  • Brown pitched all seven innings, allowing just one earned run on five hits while striking out four batters.

 
 

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Spring Arbor and Bethel were in a pitching duel through the early stages of game two. Both pitchers, Heath and BC's Bethany Hogg, posted zeros in each of the first three innings.
  • The Pilots broke the deadlock with a run in the fourth and another in the fifth to pull in front 2-0.
  • Spring Arbor responded with five runs in the home half of the fifth. The Cougars opened the inning with three consecutive hits, including an RBI single by Abbey Burdgick. Following an RBI single by Semones, Jordan Burman blasted a three-run home run.
  • Aubrey Herrema and Taylor picked up two hits each while Hope Longenbarger scored twice. Burman's homer was her team-leading seventh of the season, which also ranks third in the Crossroads League.
  • Heath went the distance for her eighth victory of the season. She surrendered two runs on six hits with five strikeouts.

 
 

UP NEXT

Spring Arbor hosts Huntington University (17-12, 12-7 CL) on Thursday, Apr. 19. The Cougars and Foresters will play a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
