Cougars hold off Grace to advance in CL Tournament

INDIANAPOLIS – After dropping the opening game of the Crossroads League Tournament, the Spring Arbor University softball team staved off elimination with a 6-4 win over Grace on Wednesday.

The Cougars advance to play Taylor University in an elimination game on Thursday starting at 12 p.m. from the campus of Marian University.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

  • A sacrifice fly from Sydney Taylor in the first inning put Spring Arbor on top early, but Mount Vernon Nazarene tallied an unearned run in the home half of the first to tie the score.
  • The Cougars took the lead off a MVNU error in the second.
  • The score remained 2-1 in favor of SAU until the fifth inning when MVNU's Alyson Adams delivered a two-out RBI double to even the score again. Mount Vernon Nazarene pushed one more run across in the sixth.
  • Spring Arbor was held to four hits.
  • Kelsey Brown tossed all six innings. The senior pitcher limited MVNU to just two earned runs on seven hits while also striking out six batters.

 
 

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

  • After its offensive struggles in the first game of the day, Spring Arbor tallied six runs on 11 hits in game two.
  • The Cougars scored twice in second and would never surrender the lead.
  • Aubrey Herrema highlighted a two-run fourth inning with an RBI single to help boost the SAU lead to 4-0.
  • Spring Arbor took a 6-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh, but Grace would not go down quietly. The Lancers pushed three runs across to make things interesting, but that was as close as they would get.
  • Jessica Marwede went 3-for-4 with a run scored while Taylor and Herrema picked up two hits each.
  • Lauren Heath tossed a complete game allowing four runs, but only two earned.

 
 

UP NEXT

Spring Arbor will face Taylor on Thursday, May 3 at 12 p.m. The winner advances to play the winner of the Mount Vernon Nazarene and Huntington contest at 5 p.m.
