GOSHEN, Ind. – Paul Marandet matched his season-high with 23 points to lead four Spring Arbor University players in double figures as No. 8 ranked SAU pulled away in the second half to defeat Goshen College 82-68 on Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars led by two at halftime, but quickly separated themselves in the second stanza on the way to their fifth consecutive victory.
Spring Arbor improved to 19-3 overall – tied for the third most total wins in the country – while also maintaining its first place position in the Crossroads League standings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Goshen, seeking its first Crossroads League win of the season, played an inspired first half against the No. 8 ranked Cougars. The Maple Leafs shot 58 percent (17-for-29) and held an eight point lead midway through the half.
- Spring Arbor slowly chipped away at the deficit, and a bucket by Tyler Kaminski in the closing seconds gave SAU a 43-41 lead at halftime.
- After giving up 41 first half points, the SAU defense locked down the Maple Leafs in the second half, holding them to a paltry 27 percent (8-for-30) from the field.
- Goshen connected on just two of its first 15 shots in the period, and Spring Arbor took full advantage. The Cougars used a 22-7 run to open up a 17-point lead during GC's shooting slump and would never look back.
FOR THE COUGARS
- Marandet finished with 23 points and six assists. He did most of his damage from the charity stripe making 12-of-13 free throw attempts.
- Jeff Beckman had 17 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Tom Hamilton added 13 points while Brandon Durnell chipped in 10 points and seven boards.
- Spring Arbor was 55 percent (24-for-44) from the floor and 87 percent (27-for-31) from the free throw line.
- The Cougars dominated the glass, out-rebounding Goshen 33-19.
FOR THE MAPLE LEAFS
- Alhassan Barrie was Goshen's leading scorer with 19 points while adding nine rebounds. Two other Maple Leafs also scored in double figures.
- The Leafs finished the afternoon shooting 42 percent (25-for-59) and were just 4-for-20 from behind the arc.
UP NEXT
Spring Arbor hosts Grace College (11-11, 1-9 CL) on Tuesday, Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. and will welcome Huntington University (13-9, 3-7 CL) to town on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 3 p.m. Saturday's game against the Foresters is also the Hall of Fame game and SAU will recognize its 2019 Athletic Hall of Fame class at halftime of the contest.
