Nelson eclipses 1,000 career points in Cougars' loss to Grace

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University women's basketball team fell to Grace College 66-49 on Wednesday night inside the McDonald Athletic Center. 

Senior Rachel Nelson surpassed 1,000 career points in the contest, becoming the 22nd player in program history to reach the milestone. Nelson entered the game four points shy of 1,000, and finished with 10 points on 4-of-10 shooting, including two three-pointers.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Nelson opened the scoring for Spring Arbor with a three-pointer at the 7:21 mark of the first quarter, closing Grace's lead to one, 4-3. A late Lancer run, however, would give the visitors a 19-13 advantage heading into the second quarter.
  • Grace led by eight midway through the second period before Nelson knocked down her second three of the night, pushing her over the 1,000 point mark and putting SAU within five, 23-18, with 4:30 to play in the half.
  • The Lancers took a nine-point lead into halftime and quickly extended the margin to double digits in the third quarter.
  • Spring Arbor trimmed the deficit to seven early in the fourth quarter, but a 10-0 Grace run put the game out of reach.

 
 

FOR THE COUGARS

  • Gabby Barnett posted a team-high 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting, and nearly recorded the double-double adding nine rebounds. Gracie Cabana followed with 11 points while Nelson finished with 10 and six boards.
  • Teona Feldpausch hauled in a game-high 10 rebounds while also recording six points and five assists.
  • Grace, which boasts one of the league's top defenses, limited Spring Arbor to 32 percent (18-for-56) shooting from the floor and was forced SAU into 21 turnovers on the night.

 
 

FOR THE LANCERS

  • Brooke Sugg, one of the league's leading scorers, paced the Lancers with 18 points. Vironnica Drake chipped in 16.
  • Grace connected on 43 percent (26-for-61) of its field goal attempts.
  • The Lancers did most of their damage down low, scoring 36 points in the paint, and had big contributions off the bench with 24 bench points.
