Women's Basketball drops Crossroads League tilt at Huntington

HUNTINGTON, Ind. – The Spring Arbor University women's basketball team returned to Crossroads League play on Saturday with a trip to Huntington University. The two teams were tied at halftime, but on offensive outburst in the third quarter was enough to propel the Foresters to a 67-55 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Gracie Cabana scored eight first quarter points, helping Spring Arbor race out to an early 12-3 lead.
  • The Cougars stayed in front for most of the first two quarters, but a last-second three-pointer by HU's Sarah Fryman tied the score at 27-27 heading into halftime.
  • The tide shifted in the third quarter when the Foresters shot 69 percent (9-for-13) from the field and outscored the Cougars 23-12. Spring Arbor was within two, 37-35, at the 4:00 mark before the home team closed out the period on a 13-4 to take control.
  • The Cougars closed the gap to seven late in the fourth quarter after trailing by as many as 15, but that was as close as they would get.

 
 

FOR THE COUGARS

  • Cabana posted 14 points and four assists. Anne Marie Wright and Rachel Nelson also scored in double figures. Wright finished with 11 points while Nelson added 10 and a team-high four rebounds.
  • Spring Arbor had one of its best shooting performances of the season, hitting 46 percent (21-for-46) of its shots. The Cougars also made nine three's in the contest.
  • SAU attempted just seven free throws going 4-for-7 from the charity stripe.

 
 

FOR THE FORESTERS

  • Fryman led Huntington with 28 points while two other Foresters reached double-digits.
  • HU shot 50 percent (24-for-48) on the afternoon and went 16-for-18 from the free throw line.
  • The Foresters outscored SAU in the paint 36-20.

 
 

UP NEXT

Spring Arbor travels to Mount Vernon Nazarene University (9-9, 2-4 CL) on Wednesday, Jan. 9. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
