Women's Basketball falls to IU-South Bend in season opener

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University women's basketball team dropped its 2019-20 season opener, falling to Indiana University-South Bend 74-42 on Saturday afternoon inside the McDonald Athletic Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the first game of the season for both teams, Spring Arbor and Indiana-South Bend got off to a slow start on the offense end. The Titans four straight points late in the period to go up 12-5, but Gracie Cabana buried a three-pointer just before the buzzer to close the gap to four, 12-8, after the first 10 minutes.
  • The visitors broke the game open in the second quarter. IU-South Bend outscored SAU 24-7 in the period to take a 36-15 lead into halftime.
  • The Titans were able to maintain a comfortable cushion throughout the second half to deal the Cougars their first loss of the season.

 
 

FOR THE COUGARS

  • Anne Marie Wright was the leading scorer for Spring Arbor with 11 points and knocked down three treys. Freshman Macie Hefron added nine points and three rebounds in her collegiate debut.
  • Teona Feldpausch finished with seven points and six rebounds while Cabana had six points and a team-high four assists. Grace Shoobridge hauled in a career-high 11 rebounds.
  • Spring Arbor shot 30 percent (13-for-43) from the field and 29 percent (5-for-17) from behind the arc.

 
 

FOR THE TITANS

  • Four Indiana-South Bend players reached double figures. The Titans were led by Kyleigh Kubik, who scored 14 points off the bench.
  • IU-South Bend shot 43 percent (29-for-67) on the afternoon, including shooting at a 41 percent (9-for-22) clip from long range. The Titans outscored SAU in the paint, 38-14, and held a 41-31 advantage in rebounds.

 
 

UP NEXT

Spring Arbor will play its next three games on the road, beginning with a trip Cornerstone University (1-1) on Wednesday, Oct. 30.
