MOUNT VERNON, Ohio – For the second time this week, the No. 7 ranked Spring Arbor University men's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker to a Top 25 team, falling to No. 4 Mount Vernon Nazarene University 77-76 in overtime on Saturday afternoon.
Paul Marandet dropped a game-high 31 points, including the last-second, game-tying 3-pointer to force overtime. Jeff Beckman and Payton DeWildt also scored in double figures with 16 and 12 points, respectively.
It is the second time in as many meetings that Mount Vernon Nazarene defeated Spring Arbor in overtime after MVNU outlasted the Cougars 89-87 in an epic triple OT game in the Crossroads League Tournament Semifinals last season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Mount Vernon Nazarene led for most of the first half, and held an eight-point advantage, 30-22, with 5:24 remaining in the period. However, Spring Arbor outscored the home team 12-2 over the final three minutes to take a 34-32 lead into halftime.
- The Cougars expanded their lead to double-digits midway through the second stanza.
- Spring Arbor was in front 54-43 at the 8:58 mark, but the Mount Vernon Nazarene defense stepped up, holding SAU to just two field goals over the next six minutes. MVNU took advantage of the Cougars' dry spell, chipping away at the deficit to tie the score 58-58 with 2:58 left on the clock.
- MVNU pulled ahead by three, 65-62, in the final minute, but Marandet would bury a clutch three with two seconds remaining to send the game to overtime.
- The reigning Crossroads League Player of the Week, Jevon Knox, led the way for MVNU in overtime, scoring six points, including hitting the jumper with 26 seconds left that helped put the game away. The Cougars kept the pressure on with Marandet hitting another late triple, but MVNU was perfect from the charity stripe down the stretch to secure the win.
FOR SPRING ARBOR
- Marandet went 12-for-21 from the field, including 4-for-5 from 3-point range, on his way to a game-high 31 points. The senior floor general also dished out nine assists and grabbed five rebounds.
- Beckman posted his first double-double of the season with 16 points and 12 rebounds. DeWildt finished with 12 points and four boards.
- Spring Arbor connected on 45 percent (30-for-67) of its field goal attempts, including making nine 3-pointers – just one off the season-high.
FOR MOUNT VERNON NAZARENE
- Four players from Mount Vernon Nazarene reached double figures. Austin Jones had 21 and Knox followed with 19. Isaac White notched 15 points and Jacob Paul had 10.
- Mount Vernon Nazarene shot 44 percent (30-for-68) on the afternoon.
- MVNU held a 40-35 advantage in rebounds, scoring 10 points off nine offensive boards.
