SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University women's basketball team's comeback effort fell just short against Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Wednesday evening, falling 51-49 Wednesday evening inside the McDonald Athletic Center.
The Cougars trailed by as many as 13 in the game, and were able to cut a nine-point deficit with 7:40 remaining to two in the final seconds, but a potential game-winning three-pointer from Gracie Cabana came up empty at the buzzer.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Mount Vernon Nazarene never trailed in the game. The visitors grabbed their largest lead of the night late in the second quarter when they led 27-14.
- Spring Arbor was not able to get much going offensively through the first two quarters, but continued to fight, using its defense to get back in the game. In the third quarter, SAU held MVNU to just five points on 1-for-11 shooting and closing the double-digit deficit to four, 34-30, heading into the fourth quarter.
- An early fourth quarter run from Mount Vernon Nazarene gave the visitors a nine-point cushion, 42-33, with 7:40 left on the clock.
- Spring Arbor would make a furious comeback though behind 13 fourth quarter points by Rachel Nelson. The senior knocked down back-to-back clutch three's to get the Cougars' within three. Moments later, great defense led to more points when a block by Grace Shoobridge resulted in a layup from Nelson to trim the deficit to two, 46-44.
- In the final minute of regulation and trailing by two, the SAU defense stepped up once again and got the stop it needed. Following a timeout with 5.6 seconds left, the Cougars had one last chance, but Cabana's corner three rimmed out.
FOR THE COUGARS
- Nelson finished with a game-high 20 points going 8-for-13 from the field, including 4-of-7 from long range. She also added six rebounds and three steals.
- Gabby Barnett had nine points, seven rebounds and two blocks while Anne Marie Wright tallied eight points. Cabana ended the night with six points, three boards, three assists and four steals.
- Spring Arbor shot 33 percent (19-for-58) overall and 26 percent (7-for-27) from behind the three-point line.
FOR MOUNT VERNON NAZARENE
- Taylor Gregory, the reigning Crossroads League Player of the Week, was one of three MVNU players to score 11 points. She also added 14 rebounds for the double-double.
- MVNU made 34 percent (19-for-56) of its field goal attempts and was limited to just 1-for-16 from the three-point line.
