Softball picks up two wins against Bethel to complete season sweep

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University softball team earned wins in both games of a doubleheader with Bethel College on Saturday. The Cougars claimed a 6-2 win in game one before coming away with a 9-3 victory in game two to complete the sweep.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Bethel held a 2-1 lead entering the bottom of the second inning, but Spring Arbor would strike for three runs to jump in front. Jade Nowe and Sydney Taylor got the inning started with back-to-back base hits, and following a sacrifice bunt by Amber Beal, Nowe would score on a wild pitch. Taylor crossed the plate later in the inning on an RBI double by Hannah Sutton, and Sutton would score on a hit by Abbey Burdgick.
  • That was all the support Lauren Wirgau needed. Fresh off a complete game, one-hitter against Taylor University, the junior pitcher blanked the Pilots over the final five innings to secure her 10th win of the season.
  • Sutton led the way offensively going 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Five other Cougars also record hits.

 
 

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Spring Arbor scored two runs in the first inning and one in the second to grab an early 3-0 lead.
  • Bethel battled back with two in the fourth inning, but the Cougars answered immediately with two of their own in the home half of the frame, highlighted by a two-out, RBI single by Nowe.
  • Clinging to a 6-3 advantage, SAU put the game away with a three-run sixth inning. Hope Longenbarger drove in Kyla Semones with a base hit. Longenbarger would also cross the plate later in the inning on a BC error. Brookelyn Stafford capped the scoring with an RBI single, bringing in Sarah Matlock.
  • Nowe was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate while Cora Millay was 3-for-5 with an RBI and run scored. Semones and Matlock also had multi-hit games with Matlock also scoring three times.
  • Melody Donovan earned the win pitching four innings and allowing two earned runs on six hits. Kelsey Sturgeon closed out the final three innings giving up one run on four hits.
