Softball splits pair of close games at Grace

WINONA LAKE, Ind. – Two close games produced a split between the Spring Arbor University softball team and Grace College on Wednesday. The Cougars scored two late runs to win game one 7-6 before suffering an 11-9 loss to the Lancers in game two.

The two teams split their four-game season series with the four contests decided by a combined total of just five runs.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Spring Arbor trailed 4-1 through two innings, but erupted for four runs in third to grab the lead. Jade Nowe highlighted the offensive outburst with her second home run in as many days.
  • Grace scored twice in the fifth inning to jump in front, but the lead was short-lived. The Cougars responded right away with two runs of their own in the sixth, including what would prove to be the game-winning run on an RBI double by Kyla Semones.
  • Semones was 3-for-4 and only a home run shy of hitting for the cycle. The senior outfielder also drove in three runs and scored once. Sarah Matlock and Hannah Sutton collected two hits apiece while Cora Millay scored twice.
  • Lauren Wirgau pitched all seven innings. She gave up just four earned runs and struck out six batters.

 
 

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Both teams scored in each of the first four innings with Grace building an 11-6 edge.
  • Spring Arbor closed the gap to two, 11-9, in the fifth inning manufacturing three runs on a sacrifice fly, a ground out and a bases loaded walk.
  • Still trailing by two entering the seventh, the Cougars threatened, putting their first two batters on base, but were unable to push any runs across.
  • Chloe Gignac, Hope Longenbarger and Maddison Brock all had a multi-hit game. Gignac also scored twice while Longenbarger recorded two RBI's.

 
 

UP NEXT

The Cougars will return to action on Tuesday, Apr. 23 when they visit the University of Saint Francis (21-19, 12-13 CL).
