Cougars walk off winners in completion of suspended game

GOSHEN, Ind. – Spring Arbor University finally got back on the field with Goshen College after darkness suspended the game with the Maple Leafs 18 days ago and walked off as 12-11 winners on Friday. Sophomore Cora Millay played the hero, delivering the game-winning hit with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The game was originally suspended on Apr. 8 in the bottom of the fourth inning with Goshen leading 3-2.
  • Spring Arbor resumed the fourth inning by erupting for seven runs on six hits.
  • The Cougars held an 8-5 lead after five innings, but the Maple Leafs tallied six runs in the sixth to pull ahead.
  • SAU answered back with three in the home half of the sixth to tie the score behind back-to-back RBI doubles by Kyla Semones and Hope Longenbarger.
  • In the seventh, Amber Beal and Hannah Sutton reached base to start the inning. A sacrifice bunt by Brooklyn Stafford advanced both runners, setting the stage for Millay's walk-off single.
  • Longenbarger was 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI's while Chloe Gignac was 3-for-3 with two RBI's and two runs scored. Along with a pair of hits, Semones scored three runs and drove in two.
  • Lauren Wirgau earned the win in the circle. Kelsey Sturgeon pitched the first five innings, allowing four earned runs with two strikeouts.

 
 

UP NEXT

Spring Arbor hosts No. 13 Indiana Wesleyan University on Saturday, Apr. 27 starting at 11 a.m. in its final games of the regular season. It will be Senior Day for the Cougars as the honor their four seniors, Amber Beal, Kyla Semones, Hannah Sutton and Sydney Taylor.
