SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University softball team was just three outs away from dealing undefeated Marian University its first loss of the season Tuesday afternoon, but the No. 5 ranked Knights rallied for four runs in the seventh inning and escaped with a 4-2 win on their way to sweeping the doubleheader.

Spring Arbor 2, Marian 4

LOCATION: Cougar Softball Field | Spring Arbor, Mich.

RECORDS: Spring Arbor 11-22 (4-17 CL), Marian 34-0 (22-0 CL)

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Marian led 1-0 after the first inning before pushing four unearned runs across in the second to take a commanding 5-0 lead.
  • That was more than enough run support for last year's Crossroads League Pitcher of the Year, Breena Smith, who limited Spring Arbor to one hit over four shutout innings.
  • Cora Millay, Sydney Taylor and Brookelyn Stafford each recorded a hit in the game.
  • Melody Donovan pitched all seven innings surrendering only five earned runs.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

  • After scoring nine times in the first game of the doubleheader, Marian was blanked through the first six frames in game two. Lauren Wirgau silenced one of the nation's best offensive teams, limiting MU to zero runs and just four hits.
  • Spring Arbor loaded the bases with one out in the third inning, setting the stage for a two-RBI double by Hope Longenbarger to put SAU in front.
  • That was how the score stayed entering the seventh. After being shut down offensively for six innings, Marian was able to breakthrough. The first five batters reached base for the Knights on their way to plating four runs.
  • Millay and Longenbarger combined for four of SAU's five hits.
