Women's Soccer nets eight goals in home opener

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The No. 4 ranked Spring Arbor University women's soccer team opened its 2019 home schedule with a bang Tuesday night, dominating Point Park University 8-0 in its home opener.

Six different Cougars scored in the match, including a pair of goals from, both, Kaley Buck and Madison Marshall, while Lexi Ponstein recorded three assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Cougars held a 1-0 lead over Point Park heading into the final five minutes of the first half when they broke the game open. In the 41st minute, a free kick from Mackenzie Selvius found its way through the goal area and Alicia Hall was there to tap it in. Three minutes later, Buck added her second marker of the half to put SAU up 3-0 heading into the intermission.
  • The flood gates opened in the second half as Spring Arbor tallied five goals over the next 45 minutes. Rebekah Cotton, Selvius, Maddy Wierda and Marshall, twice, all found the back of the net.
  • Spring Arbor finished the match with a 31-1 shot advantage over Point Park.
  • Goalkeepers Emily Ponstein and Samantha Tracey combined for the shutout. Buck and Marshall each scored twice while Lexi Ponstein was credited with a career-high three assists.

 
 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Spring Arbor improves to 6-0 against Point Park since the 2014 season with five of the victories coming by shutout.
  • The eight goals scored were the most by the Cougars since putting eight on Asbury (Ky.) in the opening round of the NAIA national tournament in 2017.
  • Buck recorded the third multi-goal game of her career while Marshall registered her first.

 
 

UP NEXT
