Cougars' upset bid of No. 11 Saint Francis comes up short

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Spring Arbor University women's basketball team put a scare into No. 11 Saint Francis on Saturday afternoon inside the Hutzell Athletic Center. The Cougars led by three halfway through the fourth quarter, but Saint Francis fought its way back and escaped with a narrow 64-62 win.

Grace Shoobridge scored a career-high 21 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. Anne Marie Wright finished with 16 points while Gracie Cabana posted 13 points and five assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Saint Francis led by 12 at the 5:13 mark of the second quarter – its largest lead of the game – but Spring Arbor would battle its way back. The Cougars closed period on a 10-3 run, capped by a 3-pointer from Wright, to trim the deficit to five, 31-26, at halftime.
  • The home team would increase the margin to double digits once again in the third quarter, but SAU refused to quit, fighting its way back to make it a one point game, 48-47.
  • A layup by Shoobridge and another triple from Wright gave Spring Arbor a three-point lead, 57-54, at the 6:32 mark of the fourth quarter – the Cougars' first lead since the first quarter.
  • Spring Arbor trailed by one in the final moments of the game, however, was held without a field goal over the final three minutes.
  • Saint Francis increased its lead to two after a made free throw in the closing seconds, but would miss the second, leaving the door open for the Cougars. However, an SAU 3-point attempt at the buzzer came up empty.

 
 

FOR SPRING ARBOR

  • Shoobridge was 8-for-11 from the field and 5-for-7 from the free throw line to score a career-best 21 points. She also hauled in a game-high 14 rebounds to record her fifth double-double of the season.
  • Wright and Cabana combined for seven 3-pointers and would score 16 and 13 points, respectively.
  • Spring Arbor shot 47 percent (24-for-51) on the afternoon.

 
 

FOR SAINT FRANCIS

  • Kara Gerka led Saint Francis with 15 points and Cassidy Crawford followed with 14.
  • Saint Francis shot 40 percent (27-for-66). USF scored 44 of its 64 points in the paint.
