Late run pushes Cornerstone past SAU on opening night

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University women's basketball team dropped its season opener to Cornerstone University 65-62 on Tuesday.

The Cougars led most of the night, and held a 10 point advantage with five minutes left, but the Golden Eagles closed out the game on a 16-3 run to spoil SAU's opening night.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • Gracie Cabana started red-hot, scoring 10 first quarter points to help give Spring Arbor a 16-10 lead after the first 10 minutes. Cabana finished the night with 14 points and two assists.
  • It was a three point game with less than two minutes to go in the third quarter when SAU scored six consecutive points to stretch its lead to nine, 50-41, heading into the final period.
  • Cornerstone trimmed the deficit to three, 52-49, in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, but an old-fashioned three-point play by Grace Shoobridge sparked a 7-0 Cougar run to give Spring Arbor its largest lead of the night, 59-49, with 4:25 remaining on the clock.
  • The Golden Eagles rallied back, however, taking a 65-62 lead in the closing seconds. The Cougars had one last chance to tie the score, but a 3-pointer by Anne Marie Wright at the buzzer was off the mark.
  • Teona Feldpausch recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Shoobridge finished with 11 points, five boards and four blocks. Allison Hoek added nine points and seven rebounds off the bench.
