Second half run keys Cougars' win over No. 6 MVNU

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – A big second half run propelled Spring Arbor University to key Crossroads League win on Saturday in a loud McDonald Athletic Center as the Cougars knocked off No. 6 ranked Mount Vernon Nazarene University 75-60.

During a seven minute stretch in the second half, Spring Arbor held MVNU without a field goal. The Cougars capitalized on the visitor's dry spell, going on a 14-1 run to grab a double-digit lead and take control of the game.

Brandon Durnell recorded his second double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Payton DeWildt also scored 18 points and Paul Marandet added 16 with eight assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • A Mount Vernon Nazarene scoring spurt gave the visitors a six-point lead with under eight minutes to play in the first half, but DeWildt put a halt to the run with six consecutive points to tie the score, 27-27. The two teams would enter halftime tied 33-33.
  • The lead changed hands seven times through the first 11 minutes of the second half.
  • A 3-pointer from Jevon Knox put Mount Vernon Nazarene ahead 55-53 at the 9:34 mark, but that would be MVNU's only field goal over the next seven minutes.
  • Spring Arbor took full advantage of the visitor's dry spell. A triple from Tyler Kaminski ignited a 14-1 run that put SAU in command.
  • The 60 points were a season-low for MVNU.

 
 

FOR SPRING ARBOR

  • Durnell posted his second double-double of the season. The junior from Fort Wayne scored 11 of his 18 points in the second half.
  • With his 16 points, Marandet moved closer to the 2,000 career point milestone. The senior from Warsaw, Indiana now stands at 1,989 points and looks to become just the eighth player in program history to eclipse 2,000 points.
  • Kaminski provided a spark off the bench, matching his season-high with 12 points knocking down four 3-pointers.
  • Spring Arbor shot 56 percent (30-for-53) on the afternoon, including nearly 70 percent (16-for-23) in the second half. The Cougars also dominated the glass, out-rebounding MVNU 34-21.

 
 

FOR MOUNT VERNON NAZARENE

  • Alex Johnson had 18 points to lead Mount Vernon Nazarene while Jevon Knox tallied 15.
  • MVNU shot 47 percent (25-for-53) from the field and was held to 5-for-20 from 3-point range.
