Softball splits doubleheader with Siena Heights

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University softball team played its home opener on Wednesday and split a doubleheader against Siena Heights University. The Cougars edged out the Saints in game one 2-1, but dropped game two 10-6.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Siena Heights struck first with a run in the top of the first inning, but Spring Arbor answered immediately with a run of its own in the bottom half of the frame. Jessie Panchaud led things off with a base hit and eventually scored on a groud out by Jade Nowe.
  • The Cougars scored what proved to be the game-winning run in the third inning. Cora Millay hit a sharp single into right field that got past the right fielder, and Millay sprinted all the way around the bases.
  • Kelsey Sturgeon picked up the win. Sturgeon allowed just one run over four innings of work. Elena Jones shutout the Saints over the final three innings to earn the save.
 

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Hannah Laurin put SAU on the board in the bottom of the first with a two-run home run.
  • Siena Heights would pull ahead after scoring eight unanswered runs over the course of the third, fourth and fifth innings.
  • The Cougars got one run back in the fifth, and closed the gap to two, 8-6, after scoring three times in the sixth inning – highlighted by a two-run bomb by Chloe Gignac.
  • Siena Heights pushed across two insurance runs in the seventh and held on to earn the split.
  • Laurin and Gignac had two hits and two RBI's apiece to lead the SAU offense. Laurin pitched 3.2 innings giving up six runs – only two earned – while striking out three batters.
