No. 5 Marian tops Softball

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University softball team opened Crossroads League play against No. 5 ranked Marian University on Saturday. The Cougars went toe-to-toe with one of the best teams in the country, but a four-run seventh inning allowed Marian to take game one 13-7. The Knights prevailed 9-3 in game two to extend their winning streak to nine.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Marian jumped out to a 7-3 lead after two innings of play, but Spring Arbor refused to back down. The Cougars scored two in the third on RBI hits by Sarah Matlock and Chloe Gignac, and added two more in the fifth. Jade Nowe provided an RBI double and Brookelyn Stafford drew a bases loaded walk to bring home Nowe.
  • Leading 8-7 after five, the Knights added a key insurance run in the sixth inning before breaking the game open with four runs in the seventh.
  • Matlock was 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI's and a run scored. Hannah Laurin finished with two hits and Nowe and Gignac recorded two RBI's each.
 

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Marian scored in the top of the first inning, but SAU answered with a run of its own in the home half of the first. Jessie Panchaud led things off with a base hit and eventually came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Nowe.
  • However, Marian would score in each of the next four innings to build an insurmountable lead.
  • Spring Arbor finished with 11 hits in the game. Panchaud and Cora Millay had two each while Panchaud also scored twice.
 

UP NEXT
Spring Arbor travels to Fort Wayne, Indiana on Tuesday, Mar. 23 to take on the University of Saint Francis beginning at 3 p.m.
