Baseball splits DH in final Florida matchup

LAKE WALES, Fla. – The Spring Arbor University baseball team finished its Florida Spring Break trip with a split in the final two games against Warner University. The Cougars picked up their first win of the season in Game 1 by a final of 5-4 before dropping Game 2 10-8.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Sean Cassel started on the mound for the Cougars and was cruising early on. Cassel tallied his third and final strikeout of his outing to end the bottom of the second inning.
  • Brant Mast reached base safely with two outs in the top of the third on a Warner error. Jackson Kitchen came up next and hit an RBI-single to give SAU a 1-0 lead.
  • Cassel finished his outing by tossing a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the third, and Zach Kraabel eventually took over in the fourth.
  • In the top of the fifth, Kitchen delivered again with an RBI-single scoring Ben Redfield to make it 2-0.
  • The Royals tied it up in the fifth, but the Cougars quickly regained the lead. Nick Carroll led off the sixth inning with a triple and came around to score on a Brandon Haynes single up the middle. Later in the inning, Haynes would eventually come around to score on a passed ball and freshman Jake Spedoske, who entered the game as a pinch-runner, scored on Redfield's RBI-groundout, making it 5-2 Cougars.
  • Warner got one back in the sixth and battled in the seventh against SAU closer Vincent Herschberger, but the Cougars were able to shut down the Royals to win 5-4.
  • Kraabel picked up his first win of the season and Herschberger earned the save.
 

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Cade Kontny earned the nod for his first start of the season and third appearance overall. Warner scored a run in the first, but Kontny was able to work his way out of a bases-loaded jam.
  • In the top of the second, the Royals made an error which plated pinch-runner Josiah Kitchen and Kraabel to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead.
  • The Royals had a big five-run inning in the bottom of the third to take a 6-2 lead.
  • In the top of the fourth, SAU inched closer as Redfield singled to score Brennan Moran. A few batters later, Herschberger plated Redfield with an RBI-single of his own. After two errors from the Royals scored Brant Mast and Haynes, the game was all tied up 6-6.
  • After a scoreless inning featuring two strikeouts from Jon Williams, Jackson Kitchen hit a two-out triple in the top of the fifth to score Mast and Moran, giving SAU an 8-6 lead.
  • Brant Mullins took over on the mound in the bottom of the fifth. The Royals stunned the Cougars with a four-spot to make it 10-8.
 

UP NEXT
Spring Arbor will play its conference opener on the road in form of a double-header on Friday, Mar. 5 against Mount Vernon Nazarene University. The first game starts at 1 p.m.

The Cougars will open up at home on Saturday, Mar. 6 with a double-header against MVNU also starting at 1 p.m.
