Baseball falls in first two against Marian

INDIANAPOLIS – The Spring Arbor University baseball team dropped the first two games of its four-game series against Marian University. The Cougars rallied back to tie the score in the ninth inning of game one, but Marian would win in walk-off fashion, 8-7. In game two, the Knights used a five-run third inning to defeat SAU 6-1.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Trailing 4-0 after three innings, Spring Arbor plated four runs in the fourth to tie the score – highlighted by RBI hits from Landon Raczkowski and Logan King.
  • Marian answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, and added one more in the sixth to build a 7-4 advantage.
  • Spring Arbor got one run back in the eighth inning, and tied the game with two in the ninth. Jackson Kitchen drove in Brennan Moran, and later in the inning, Ben Redfield would score on a wild pitch to tie the score 7-7.
  • Marian's Tyler Hargrove drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the ninth. After being moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, Hargrove would score on a base hit by Matteo Porcellato.
  • Peyton Harding, Kitchen and Raczkowski recorded two hits apiece to lead the SAU offense.
  • Hunter Nielsen was hit with the loss after giving up four runs on six hits in three innings pitched. Brant Mullins and Trammell Lindstrom combined to throw 2.1 innings of scoreless relief while Mullins fanned three batters.
 

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Marian pushed five runs across in the third inning, and that would be all the support MU starting pitcher Kole Aping needed. Aping limited SAU to one run on two hits while tossing all seven innings.
  • Raczkowski blasted his team-leading fourth home run of the season to provide the only run of the game for the Cougars.
  • Gavin Harris got the start on the mound and surrendered five unearned runs over 3.2 innings of work. Ryan Gillesby and Ben Garcia pitched the final 2.1 innings allowing one unearned run.

Spring Arbor and Marian will conclude their series on Monday, Mar. 21 in Indianapolis. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
