Cougars take first two of series

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University baseball team opened its four-game series with Grace College with a doubleheader sweep on Friday at Hank Burbridge Field. The Cougars used an eight-run sixth inning to take game one, 9-5, before defeating the Lancers 7-5 in the nightcap.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Grace led 3-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, but Spring Arbor would score eight runs on seven hits to take a commanding 9-3 lead. Vincent Herschberger led things off with a double to chase the Lancers' starter Evan Etchison, who had held SAU in check through the first five frames. Glenn Miller greeted the new pitcher with a line drive up the middle to bring home Herschberger. The flood gates opened after that with the Cougars getting RBI hits from Brant Mast, Jackson Kitchen, and another from Miller.
  • The Lancers closed the gap with two runs in the seventh inning, but Cade Kontny would come out of the bullpen and toss scoreless frames in the eighth and ninth to seal the win.
  • Herschberger and Miller collected three hits apiece with Herschberger scoring twice and Miller adding three RBI's.
  • Sean Cassel earned the win on the mound. Cassel worked 6.1 innings allowing three runs on four hits while striking out seven batters.
 

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Spring Arbor surrendered two runs in the top of the first inning, but responded immediately. The Cougars started the home half of the first with five consecutive hits, including a two-RBI double by Landon Raczkowski, on the way to scoring five runs and taking a 5-2 lead.
  • Trailing 6-2, Grace got within two after scoring twice in the fourth inning. However, Kontny, on in relief again, would work two more scoreless innings, and Herschberger would slam the door shut to earn his fifth save of the season.
  • Raczkowski went 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI's and a run scored to lead the way. Kitchen also picked up two hits and scored.
  • Kontny received the win pitching 2.0 innings of scoreless relief with two strikeouts. Herschberger also tossed 2.0 innings and fanned three.
 

UP NEXT
Spring Arbor concludes its series with Grace on Saturday, Mar. 27. Game one of the doubleheader is set to begin at noon with game two to follow.
