Baseball wins series with Saturday split

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Following a doubleheader sweep on Friday, the Spring Arbor University baseball team earned a series win over Grace College with an 8-5 victory in the front end of Saturday's doubleheader. The Lancers avoided the four-game sweep by defeating the Cougars 7-1 in game two.

The Cougars now stand at an even 8-8 in Crossroads League play and 12-13 overall while Grace moved to 6-10 in the conference and 9-16 on the season.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Zach Kraabel was outstanding on the mound. After surrendering a run in the first inning, the junior right-hander shut Grace out over the next four frames.
  • The Spring Arbor offense gave Kraabel an early cushion with a five-run second inning. Brennan Moran drove in three with a bases loaded triple. Jackson Kitchen and Vincent Herschberger followed with back-to-back run-scoring hits.
  • The Cougars added to their lead in the fourth inning. Herschberger ripped an RBI double before Glenn Miller blasted a two-run home run – his first of the season.
  • The Lancers got back in the game with three runs in the sixth and another run in the seventh. However, Herschberger tossed a scoreless eighth and ninth to secure the win.
  • Herschberger and Logan King finished with two hits and two RBI's apiece while Moran scored twice and drove in three runs.
  • Kraabel earned the win going 5.0 innings giving up one run on four hits while striking out a career-high seven batters. Herschberger picked up his sixth save of the season.

 
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • For the fourth straight game, Grace took the early lead on Spring Arbor pushing a run across in the top of the first inning.
  • The Lancers padded their lead with four runs in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth.
  • Spring Arbor was never able to get the bats going. Grace's starting pitcher Kameron Koch held the Cougars to just five hits on the day.
  • A solo home run from Brant Mast provided the lone run for SAU. Landon Raczkowski went 2-for-3 with two doubles.
  • Jacob Pavey suffered the loss on the mound giving up five runs on six hits in 3.0 innings of work. Ben Garcia and Jakob Southworth combined to throw 2.2 innings of scoreless relief.

Spring Arbor hosts Rochester University in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, Mar. 30 starting at 2 p.m. from Hank Burbridge Field.
