Marken records 100th career win

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Head coach Ryan Marken collected his 100th career win as the Spring Arbor University baseball team split a doubleheader with Bethel University on Monday at Hank Burbridge Field.

The Cougars defeated Bethel 6-1 in the opener before the Pilots came back to take the nightcap 2-0.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • An RBI single by Ben Redfield in the bottom of the fourth inning broke a scoreless deadlock. The Cougars would add another run in the sixth when Landon Raczkowski scored on a sacrifice fly by Redfield.
  • Bethel got one run back in the seventh to cut the deficit to one, 2-1. But, SAU responded with four runs in the seventh – highlighted by RBI hits from Jackson Kitchen and Nick Carroll – to put the game out of reach.
  • Following his three home run day Friday, Carroll collected three more hits, including a double in game one. Glenn Miller also turned in a three-hit performance.
  • Brant Mullins pitched 4.1 scoreless innings allowing only three hits. Zach Kraabel received the win on the mound working 4.2 innings of relief surrendering one run on three hits with six strikeouts.
 

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Bethel got the better of Spring Arbor in a pitchers' duel. The SAU offense was unable to get anything going against Pilots' starter Frank Plesac, who tossed seven scoreless innings and surrendered only two hits on the afternoon.
  • Ryan Gillesby turned in another great effort on the mound. Gillesby pitched four strong innings giving up a pair of unearned runs on just one hit with four strikeouts. Cade Kontny was just as good coming out of the bullpen, working three scoreless frames and fanning three batters.

Spring Arbor begins a four-game series against Crossroads League foe and No. 18 ranked Taylor University on Friday, Apr. 16 in Upland, Indiana.
