Stafford’s HR lifts Cougars past MVNU

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – A solo home run by Brookelyn Stafford in the fourth inning gave the Spring Arbor University softball team a 3-2 lead, and starting pitcher Kelsey Sturgeon made it stand up.

The win helped the Cougars split Wednesday's doubleheader against Mount Vernon Nazarene University after MVNU rallied late to take the opener 5-4.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Spring Arbor jumped all over one of the league's top pitchers early in game one. Jessie Panchaud led off the first inning with a base hit and, two batters later, Emmalee Hamp smashed home run out to right field to give SAU an early 2-0 lead.
  • Hamp, who was recently named the Crossroads League Pitcher of the Week, was outstanding through five innings, holding MVNU to just one run. However, the visitors were able to scratch another run across in the sixth to tie the score, 2-2.
  • Spring Arbor retook the lead in the home half of the sixth on a clutch two-out, two-RBI single by Panchaud. But, MVNU rallied for three runs in the seventh.
  • Hamp continued to torch opposing pitching, going 4-for-4 at the plate. Panchaud and Hannah Laurin posted two hits apiece.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Spring Arbor offense was held to three hits in game two, but that was all it needed to get the job done.
  • With the score tied 2-2 in the fourth inning, Stafford launched a solo shot to straight-away centerfield to give the Cougars the lead.
  • After giving up two runs in the top of the first inning, Sturgeon settled in and posted six straight scoreless innings to earn the win in the circle.
