Game Recap: Softball |

Softball suffers pair of one-run losses to No. 7 Marian

INDIANAPOLISEmmalee Hamp and Kelsey Sturgeon pitched two outstanding games for the Spring Arbor University softball team on Friday, but, unfortunately, both were on the wrong end of a pair of one-run games against No. 7 Marian University.

Hamp limited one of the nation's best teams to only one run in the opener, but that was all Marian needed, edging SAU 1-0. The two teams were tied in game two before the Knights scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to walk-off with a 4-3 victory.

RECORDS: Spring Arbor 14-23 (8-13 CL), Marian 32-8 (21-3 CL)

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Hamp, the reigning Crossroads League Pitcher of the Week, continued to show that she is emerging as one of the league's top pitchers. Hamp held the Knights' high-powered offense to just one run on three hits over six innings of work.
  • Marian took a 1-0 lead in the third inning. The Knights managed back-to-back two-out hits to manufacture what would prove to be the game's only run.
  • Jade Nowe collected two of SAU's four hits.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • After a leadoff single, Jessie Panchaud came around to score to give Spring Arbor a 1-0 lead after the first inning.
  • With the score tied 1-1, the Cougars plated two runs on a double by Hamp in the fifth inning to retake the lead. However, the Knights answered with two runs of their own in the home half of the fifth to even the score, 3-3.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, Marian got its leadoff batter aboard. The Knights attempted to sacrifice the runner to second, but an errant throw by the Cougars would allow the runner to cross the plate and the Knights walked-off with the win.
  • Panchaud, Hamp and Nowe finished with two hits each. Panchaud also scored twice while Hamp drove in all three runs.
  • Sturgeon pitched all seven innings. She allowed four runs – three earned – and scattered 10 hits.
