GOSHEN, Ind. – The Spring Arbor University baseball team split its twinbill at Goshen College on Friday with a 4-1 victory in the opener before falling 7-6 in game two.
Highlighting game one for the Cougars was the stellar pitching performance of
Sean Cassel, who tossed seven shutout innings while striking out a career-high 12 batters.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
- Spring Arbor scored a run in the second inning and maintained the 1-0 advantage until the sixth inning when Brandon Haynes delivered an RBI single to double the lead.
- The Cougars doubled their lead in the eighth inning when two runs scored on a successful squeeze bunt by Haynes.
- Goshen threatened in the eighth inning. The Maple Leafs loaded the bases with nobody out, and scored one run on a sacrifice fly, but Vincent Herschberger took over on the mound and was able to escape the jam with no further damage. Herschberger added a scoreless ninth to earn his seventh save of the season.
- Haynes went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI's and a run scored. Ben Redfield also finished the game with three hits, including five stolen bases.
- Cassel improved his record to 3-1 on the year. The southpaw pitched seven shutout innings allowing just two hits while fanning a career-best 12 batters.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
- A four-run second inning gave Goshen a 5-1 lead. The Maple Leafs pushed two more runs across in the fourth to increase the margin.
- Spring Arbor rallied back with three runs in the fifth inning and two runs in the sixth, but it was not enough.
- Haynes collected three more hits, including a double. Landon Raczkowski went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored while Brant Mast also picked up a pair of hits.
- Zach Kraabel suffered the loss on the mound, surrendering seven runs over 3.1 innings of work. Jacob Pavey pitched 2.2 scoreless innings of relief while striking out four batters.
