Gignac’s grand slam highlights sweep of Bethel

MISHAWAKA, Ind. – A grand slam by Chloe Gignac in the top of the ninth inning powered the Spring Arbor University softball team to a 12-7 win in extra innings to complete the doubleheader sweep of Bethel University on Friday.

In game one, the Cougars defeated the Pilots 7-1 behind a dominant performance from Emmalee Hamp, going 2-for-5 with two RBI's and two runs scored and a complete game effort in the circle with a season-high 10 strikeouts.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Hamp put Spring Arbor on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning with a two-run home run – her second of the season. The Cougars added to their lead in the second on an RBI double by Gignac.
  • Trailing 5-0 in the sixth, Bethel scratched across a run to cut into the deficit.
  • Spring Arbor answered with two more runs in the seventh inning. Brookelyn Stafford scored on a sacrifice fly from Abbie Funk. Later in the inning, Sarah Tourney crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
  • Hamp went 2-for-5 at the plate with two RBI's and two runs scored. Jade Nowe and Funk also finished with two hits apiece.
  • Hamp tossed her fourth complete game of the season allowing only one run on five hits while fanning a season-best 10 batters.

 
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Spring Arbor trailed 6-4 heading into the seventh inning, but back-to-back two-out RBI singles by Hamp and Nowe tied the score and sent the game into extra innings.
  • The Cougars capitalized on a pair of Pilot errors to push one run across in the eighth, but the home team responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning.
  • SAU recorded three straight hits to open the ninth inning before Stafford drew a walk to bring in the go-ahead run. Two batters later, Gignac broke the game wide open, clearing the bases with a grand slam – her second big fly of the season.
  • Nowe stayed red-hot at the plate, going 4-for-5 with two RBI's and a run scored. Hamp picked up three more hits with two RBI's and two runs scored while Tourney and Sarah Matlock recorded two hits, including a two-run homer by Matlock.
  • Hamp earned her second win of the day in the circle, pitching the final 1.2 innings while striking out three more hitters.
