Cougars sweep Grace on Senior Day

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University softball team celebrated Senior Day with a doubleheader sweep of Grace College on Friday. The Cougars defeated the Lancers 8-1 in the opener and 7-4 in game two.
 
Following the game, head coach Deb Thompson and the Cougars recognized and celebrated the careers of their seniors – Cora Millay, Abbey Burdgick and Dani Linderer.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • A five-run fourth inning helped lift Spring Arbor past Grace in the opener. With the score tied 1-1, SAU plated five runs on three hits, including a big two-RBI double by Chloe Gignac.
  • The Cougars would tack on two more runs in the sixth on a two-RBI single by Marisa Morgan.
  • Cora Millay, Jade Nowe and Kaitlynne Allen had two hits each while Millay also scored two runs.
  • Kelsey Sturgeon earned the win in the circle. The junior pitcher tossed all seven innings, holding Grace to only one run on four hits while striking out three batters.
 
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Spring Arbor tallied five runs over the first two innings to jump on top. Hannah Laurin had a key RBI single in the first inning while Jessie Panchaud and Nowe delivered RBI hits in the second.
  • Grace scored four runs in the fourth inning to close the gap to one, 5-4, but SAU responded with two runs in the home half of the fourth to increase the margin. A triple by Millay allowed Panchaud to score, and Nowe followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home Millay.
  • That was plenty of support for Elena Jones, who did not allow a run over the final three innings.
  • Panchaud went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI. Millay also had a multi-hit game and scored twice.
  • Laurin earned the win in the circle while Jones grabbed the save after pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless relief.
