Baseball opens Grace series with DH sweep

WINONA LAKE, Ind. – The Spring Arbor University baseball team opened its four-game series against Grace College with a pair of wins on Thursday. The Cougars defeated the Lancers 6-4 in game one before posting a 4-2 victory in game two.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Landon Raczkowski gave Spring Arbor an early lead with a two-run home run in the top of the first inning.
  • The Cougars held a 4-3 lead entering the fifth inning where they were able to add an insurance run on a Brant Mast sacrifice fly. Two innings later, SAU tacked on another run when Brennan Moran scored on a base hit by Jake Spedoske.
  • Grace threatened in the ninth, putting runners on second and third with only one out, but Cade Kontny was able to work out of the jam and secure the win.
  • Raczkowski was 2-for-4, including his team-leading third homer of the season.
  • Jon Williams picked up the win on the mound allowing three runs on eight hits with five strikeouts over six innings of work. Kontny earned the save after allowing one run over three innings of relief.
 
 
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Starting pitcher Hunter Nielsen was outstanding on the mound. Nielsen shut out Grace over the first six innings before the Lancers were able to capitalize on a couple SAU miscues in the seventh and push two runs across the plate.
  • Spring Arbor scored the game's first run in the second inning when a double to right field by Peyton Harding drove in Evan Lorey.
  • The Cougars added three more in the third inning. This time it was an extra-base hit by Lorey that brought home Bryce Richey and Moran. Lorey later scored on a single by Mast.

Spring Arbor and Grace conclude the four-game set on Monday, Mar. 14 with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. in Winona Lake, Indiana.
