Softball splits on first day in Florida

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Spring Arbor University softball team opened the 2022 season on Friday with a pair of games at THE Spring Games in Florida.
 
The Cougars defeated Ave Maria University 6-0 in their opener but lost a close one, 4-3, to Florida National University.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Spring Arbor took the lead in the second inning on a two-RBI single by Abbie Funk.
  • The Cougars would add another run in the in fourth inning on an RBI double by Jessie Panchaud. Chloe Gignac and Sarah Matlock drove in runs in the fifth inning, and a Jade Nowe single brought home SAU's final run in the sixth.
  • Matlock and Nowe collected two hits apiece while. Gignac scored twice and Funk had two RBI's.
  • Emmalee Hamp pitched a complete game shutout allowing four hits over seven innings of work. She also struck out eight batters while walking only one.
 
 
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Florida National broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
  • Spring Arbor pushed two runs across in the sixth, but that was as close as SAU would get.
  • Maddie Gillett went 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. Matlock picked up two more hits and scored twice.
 
 
UP NEXT
Spring Arbor will be right back in action tomorrow with games against St. Thomas University and Cornerstone University. The Cougars will play St. Thomas at 11:15 a.m. and Cornerstone at 1:30 p.m.
