MOUNT VERNON, Ohio – The Spring Arbor University baseball team came out swinging against Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Saturday, posting an 11-5 victory over MVNU in game one of the doubleheader.
Brandon Haynes led the way for SAU going 4-for-5 with a home run and six RBI's.
Spring Arbor had a chance to split the four-game set with a win in game two after suffering a pair of losses on Friday, but a nine-run fifth inning by MVNU erased a 6-0 Cougar lead, and MVNU held on to win 10-8.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
- Spring Arbor jumped all over Mount Vernon Nazarene, scoring eight runs over the first two innings.
- Haynes highlighted a four-run first inning with a three-run blast. Haynes capped the scoring in the second inning with an RBI double.
- Haynes finished the game going 4-for-5 at the plate with six RBI's and a run scored. Ben Redfield and Peyton Harding had two hits apiece while Evan Lorey collected two RBI's.
- Cade Kontny earned the win on the mound. Kontny gave up five runs on seven hits over five innings pitched while striking out three batters. Aaron Spry pitched four scoreless innings of relief allowing just one hit and fanning two.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
- Spring Arbor scored four runs in the second inning to take an early lead.
- The Cougars increased their lead to 6-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth.
- In the home half of the fifth inning, MVNU pushed nine runs across to take the lead.
- Lorey drove in two with a base hit in the sixth inning to get SAU within one, 9-8, but MVNU would add an insurance run in the bottom half of the inning and hang on for the win.
- Lorey went 2-for-4 with two RBI's and a run scored. Jake Spedoske, Haynes and Redfield also recorded two hits in the game.
