Nielsen throws complete game, strikes out 10 in win over No. 25 Taylor

KOKOMO, Ind. – Behind an outstanding pitching performance from senior righty Hunter Nielsen, the Spring Arbor University baseball team split a Crossroads League doubleheader against No. 25 ranked Taylor University on Saturday.
 
Taylor rallied late, scoring four runs in the ninth, to claim a 5-3 win over SAU in game one, but the Cougars bounced back with a 4-3 victory in game two.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • An RBI single by Bryce Richey in the eighth inning broke a 1-1 tie. Two batters later, Peyton Harding drew a bases loaded walk to bring in an insurance run and give Spring Arbor a 3-1 lead.
  • The Trojans plated four runs in the top of the ninth inning to erase the two-run deficit and claim the series opener.
  • Richey was 2-for-4 at the plate with a double. Brennan Moran also went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Jon Williams started on the mound and was spectacular over seven shutout innings holding Taylor to just two hits while striking out seven batters. Cade Kontny suffered the loss surrendering five runs in 1.1 innings of relief.
 
 
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Spring Arbor got another great start on the mound in game two with Nielsen tossing his first complete game of the season while fanning a career-high 10 batters over his seven innings of work.
  • Taylor was able to score the game's first run in the top of the third inning, but SAU responded with three runs in the home half of the frame. Richey drove in Ben Redfield with a base hit and Landon Raczkowksi followed with a two-RBI double to put the Cougars in front 3-1.
  • Richey added to the lead with an RBI double in the fifth inning.
  • Taylor got within one run following a two-out, two-run homer in the top of the seventh, but Nielsen would strike out the next batter to finish the game.
  • Richey and Redfield collected two hits apiece with Richey driving in a pair and Redfield scoring twice.
