Women’s Basketball suffers first loss on last second shot

SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. – The Spring Arbor University women's basketball team suffered its first loss the season, falling 73-71 to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College on Saturday.
 
Two free throws from Emma Smieska gave the Cougars a 71-69 lead with 1:09 remaining, but the Pomeroys scored the final four points of the game, including a jumper with 3.5 seconds left to escape with the narrow win and remain undefeated.

GAME NOTES
  • The two undefeated teams went back-and-forth all afternoon with the game featuring 11 ties and nine lead changes.
  • Megan Zeitz hit a 3-pointer in the final seconds of the second quarter to give Spring Arbor a 10-point lead at halftime, 41-31.
  • The Cougars stretched the margin to 12, 51-39, midway through the third quarter, but the home team battled its way back. The Pomeroys would end the period on a 15-4 run to trim the deficit to one, 55-54, heading into the fourth quarter.
  • With the score tied late, Emma Smieska sank a pair of free throws to put SAU up 71-69, but SMWC knotted the game with 40 seconds left. Following a turnover by the Cougars, the Pomeroys would make a go-ahead jumper with 3.5 seconds left on the clock. Alana Nelson was able to get off a 3-point attempt before the buzzer, but the shot came up empty.
  • Alayan Kulesza matched her season-high with 18 points. Nelson finished with 16 points and eight rebounds while Smieska had 10 points, six assists and five boards.
  • Spring Arbor shot 49 percent from the field and SMWC shot 47 percent. The Cougars were 24-for-34 from the charity stripe while the Pomeroys went 14-for-17.

Spring Arbor begins Crossroads League play against Mount Vernon Nazarene University at home on Wednesday, Nov. 20. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
