UPLAND, Ind. – The Spring Arbor University softball team opened Crossroads League by splitting a pair of games against Taylor University on Tuesday in Upland, Indiana.
The Cougars won game one of the doubleheader 5-3 in extra innings, but Taylor walked-off in the bottom of the seventh in game two 7-6 to avoid the sweep.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
- Spring Arbor trailed 3-1 after three innings of play, but pushed two runs across in the fourth to tie the score. Grace Lentz led off the inning with a base hit and later scored. The Cougars tied things up when Summer Ambler scored on a base hit by Brooke Meeker.
- That was how the score stayed until the ninth inning. With two runners on, Lexi Cain delivered a clutch base hit to drive in Elaina Walker. Lentz followed with another hit to bring home Emmalee Hamp.
- Hamp, who pitched all nine innings, retired the Trojans in order in the bottom half of the ninth to earn the win. After giving up three runs over the first three innings, the senior pitcher worked six scoreless frames the rest of the way to secure her fourth victory of the season.
- Hamp was also 4-for-5 at the plate with a double and run scored. Four other Cougars recorded two hits, including Cain, Lentz, Meeker and Walker.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
- Spring Arbor fell behind early again in game two. Taylor scored four in the first and added another run in the third to build a 5-1 advantage after three frames.
- Trailing 5-2 entering the seventh, the Cougars rallied for four runs on six hits to take the lead, 6-5.
- Taylor responded, however, with back-to-back doubles to lead off the bottom of the seventh to tie the score. Then, with the bases loaded, a Trojan batter was hit by a pitch to bring home the game-winning run.
- Spring Arbor pounded out 15 hits, including three each from Cain and Maddy Thrush.
- Elena Jones pitched 2.1 innings and allowed five runs on six hits. Ambler worked the final 3.2 innings giving up two runs on three hits.

Spring Arbor plays hosts Bethel University in its home opener on Friday, Mar. 15 starting at 3 p.m. before welcoming Grace College to town the following day on Saturday, Mar. 16 at 1 p.m.
