Cougars get strong starting pitching to open series against Saint Francis

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University baseball team got a pair of strong starts from freshmen pitchers Kyler Hinken and John Hojnowski on Thursday in a doubleheader against the University of Saint Francis.
 
Hinken delivered 7.1 scoreless innings in a 7-4 game one victory while Hojnowski tossed a complete game in the second contest of the twinbill, but the Cougars would fall 1-0.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Spring Arbor plated three runs in the first inning behind a two-RBI hit by Connor Dee and an RBI double by Ryan Gonzalez.
  • The Cougars added to their lead in the second inning on a squeeze bunt by Ben Redfield that allowed Jake Spedoske to score.
  • Hinken shut down the Saint Francis lineup for the first seven innings, scattering five hits and striking out five batters.
  • Spring Arbor picked up a key insurance run in the bottom of the seventh when Jaeden Rodriguez singled to score Redfield. Bryce Richey and Dee added RBI hits in the eighth inning to put SAU ahead 7-0.
  • Saint Francis put together a rally in the ninth, scoring four runs – all with two outs – but Ryan Ruhlman was able to slam the door shut and earn the save.
  • Five Cougars finished with two hits each, including Dee, who also drove in three runs.
  • Hinken earned his third win of the season on the mound.
 
 
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • After scoring seven runs on 12 hits in game one, the Cougars were unable to get the bats going in game two.
  • Saint Francis scored the game's only run in the top of the first inning.
  • Hojnowski settled in after surrendering the first inning run and tossed six scoreless frames. In his complete game effort, the freshman from Rockwood, Michigan allowed just four hits and struck out four.
