Hamp homers twice as Cougars sweep Huntington

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University softball team started the week off with a bang Monday afternoon combining for 24 runs on 22 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Huntington University at the Cougar Softball Field.
 
Senior Emmalee Hamp highlighted the offensive explosion with a home run in each game while Maddy Thrush went a combined 4-for-7 with five runs scored and three RBIs.
 
Spring Arbor improved to 18-11 overall and 10-6 in the Crossroads League. The Cougars currently sit in third place in the league standings.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Huntington manufactured a run in the top of the first inning, but Spring Arbor answered with three of its own – highlighted by a solo shot by Hamp.
  • The Cougars added three runs in the second. Summer Ambler singled to bring home Hamp and Elaina Walker would deliver a two-RBI single to give SAU a 6-1 advantage.
  • The eight-run mercy rule came into effect with a three-run SAU sixth inning.
  • Ambler went 3-for-4 in the game with two RBIs and two runs scored. Hamp and Thrush finished with two hits apiece while Walker drove in three.
  • After allowing the run in the first inning, Hamp settled in and blanked the Foresters over the next five frames. She scattered six hits and struck out three.
 
 
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Just like in game one, Huntington was able to plate a run in the opening frame to grab the early lead. However, the Cougars were able to respond in the home half and tie the score, 1-1, after one inning of play.
  • Huntington scored four runs on five in the third inning to pull ahead 5-1.
  • Spring Arbor erupted for eight runs in the fourth. The Cougars scored three before a two-run blast by Hamp put SAU in front for good. Thrush added to the lead with a two-RBI double and Walker capped the scoring with an RBI single up the middle.
  • The Foresters cut the deficit to two, 9-7, after a two-run sixth inning.
  • In the home half of the sixth, the Cougars scored six times on five hits to bring the eight-run mercy rule into effect for the second time on the afternoon.
  • Walker was 3-for-4 with three RBIs while Thrush scored three times. Payton Grange and Hamp each had two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored.
  • Elena Jones pitched three innings and allowed four earned runs and struck out two. Tammy Craven earned the win in the circle after two solid innings of relief.
 
 
UP NEXT
Spring Arbor's games at Goshen College scheduled for Tuesday, Apr. 2 have been postponed. The Cougars are set to return to the field on Friday, Apr. 5 when they travel to Mishawaka, Indiana to take on Bethel University.
