Volleyball goes 3-1 at SHU Labor Day Invitational

ADRIAN, MI – The Spring Arbor University volleyball team had a successful holiday weekend, making the short trip to Adrian to participate in the Siena Heights Labor Day Invitational, and finishing the tournament with a 3-1 record. 
 
 
The Lady Cougars opened the weekend on Friday night with a back and forth 3-1 victory over Lawrence Tech, avenging their previous 1-3 loss in the first match of the season. The Cougars then dropped the nightcap to a tough Aquinas team, 1-3, who was undefeated coming into the match, and also receiving votes in the national rankings. On Saturday, SAU came out with a vengeance, routing Calumet St. Joseph 3-0, and downing Indiana Northwest for a second time this season, 3-1.  
 

 
The Cougars had some impressive individual performances on the weekend. Kendall Bollenbacher  and Izzy Kirkendall led the offensive effort, notching 44 and 40 kills in the four matches respectively. Gabby Bryja and Camy Wedge were leaders in facilitating the offensive effort with Bryja dishing out 73 assists and Wedge adding 60. Kirstyn Throop and Julia Mitchell once again led the defensive effort. Throop collected 65 digs, while Mitchell finished with 17 total blocks, including a career high 7 against IU-Northwest.

MATCH NOTES
  • Spring Arbor won a roller coaster first set 26-24. The Cougars had a 24-17 lead before Lawrence Tech rallied with 7 straight points to tie the score 24-24. Spring Arbor staved off the rally however getting their final two points on a service and attack error by the Blue Devils. 
  • Izzy Kirkendall notched a team-high 15 kills while Kelsie Lilly and Kendall Bollenbacher also contributed to the balanced offensive attack with 13 kills apiece. 
  •  Gabby Bryja recorded 27 assists, a career high for the Freshman. Camy Wedge also added 17 assists to aid the offense. 
  • Kirstyn Throop led the defense with 23 digs, while Julia Mitchell led with five blocks up front.

MATCH NOTES
  • Spring Arbor took a tightly contested first set 25-23, winning on a kill from Kirkendall. The Cougars played tough the rest of the match, but the Saints proved to be a little too much taking the victory in four sets. 
  • Kirkendall once again led the attack offensively with 10 kills, while Bollenbacher added 9 and Kelsie Lilly and Keely Hinzman each had 6. 
  • Wedge and Bryja each did their part with 17 and 13 assists respectively, while Throop finished with a team-high 16 digs. Mitchell added 5 blocks once again.

MATCH NOTES
  • Spring Arbor came out of the gates hot in their first game on Saturday, taking care of business against the Crimson Wave, and outplaying them in every facet of the game. That fact was fully evident in the total score discrepancy in the match, with the Cougars having a 75-40 advantage in the three sets. 
  • Natasha Bickel had a big game offensively, leading the team with 10 kills, while Kirkendall added 9 and Bollenbacher chipped in 8. 
  • Wedge led in assists with 15 also adding 7 digs, while freshman Sheridan Young led the defensive effort with a team-high 8 digs. 
 
VS. Indiana Northwest

MATCH NOTES
  • The Cougars dropped the first set, but then came back with some fire, winning the next three sets convincingly to take the match and end the weekend on a high note. 
  • Bollenbacher had a huge game with a team high 14 kills, while Lilly and Hinzman added 9 and 7 respectively. 
  • Bryja put in another solid effort with 21 assists, while Throop and Young locked down the back row with Throop collecting 19 digs, and Young chipping in 12. 
  • Mitchell had a career game defensively, as she was a force at the net with 7 blocks. 
 
 

 
UP NEXT
Spring Arbor will play in American 1 Credit Union Arena for the first time this season as they begin conference play with Crossroads League foe Marian (9-1) on Wednesday, Sept. 4th. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
