SPRING ARBOR, MI – The Crossroads League is an ultra competitive conference, especially in volleyball, and any sort of win streak can be hard to come by. For the Spring Arbor Volleyball team, that elusive streak was exactly what they were searching for against St. Francis, after their 3-1 win at Taylor on Wednesday.
The Cougars looked to be in prime position to start that streak, as Saint Francis had yet to win a single set in Crossroads League play in five games. However, in the beginning of set one, Saint Francis came out with some fire, looking to overcome that hump. Saint Francis jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead, and held that lead throughout the set, until Spring Arbor came roaring back. Down 22-18, SAU got hot, using a pair of blocks by
Natasha Bickel and
Keely Hinzman and a kill by
Kendall Bollenbacher to spearhead a 7-0 run that won them the set, 25-22.
In set two Spring Arbor stayed hot, scoring the first four points of the set, led by two aces from
Camy Wedge. Saint Francis stayed close throughout the set, even trimming the deficit to one late in the set, at 21-22, but a kill by Hinzman, and two aces from Freshman
Abby Hughes staved off the rally, and gave SAU the set win, 25-21.
Set three was all Spring Arbor, as they controlled the set, never letting Saint Francis get within 3 after a 3-0 run early put them up 7-4.
Isabelle Kirkendall and
Kendall Bollenbacher led the offensive attack in the set, with Kirkendall recording 4 kills, and Bollenbacher adding 3 and a block. Hinzman also had a big set, with two assists, two blocks, and two kills, including the dagger, which gave SAU the match victory with a set three score of 25-15.
